The fort Litharitsia is located  in the homonym park of the city of Ioannina, in α short of the old town of Ioannina. The fortress was founded on a rocky rise allowing the visitor a panoramic view of the Pamvotida lake and the surrounding mountains of the basin of Ioannina.

History

The fort Litharitsia was built in the early 19th century by Ali Pasha. This building was surrounded by the 2 palaces of Ali Pasha's sons and it was his administrative center. The fort also served as a bastion of the castle preventing external invasions. The basements were used as prisons, ammunition storage areas and places for tortures. A few years after the construction of the fort, during the siege of Ali Pasha by Hursit Mehmet Pasha, a large part of the fortress was destroyed. The infrastructures that survived were the walls and the underground tunnels.

For more than 150 years, the surviving portions of the fort remained unexploited. The urban development of the city over the years downgraded the monument. The underground tunnels were filled and covered during the configuration project of the broader area. In the late 1970 the Company of the Epirus Studies managed to exploit the fort by creating a resort on the top of the ruins.

The process of restoration and completion of the project demanded extra time and money because of issues concerning the ownership clarification of the site among other stakeholders.
