According to mythology, Aegina, owes its name to the homonym daughter of the god Aesop. God Zeus fell in love with her and moved her to the island Inoni. They had a son and together renamed the island to Aegina.

The geographical position of Aegina, located between Attica, Peloponnese and Cyclades, defined the island throughout the course of history as a transportation and commercial hub.
