It is built between the mountains Vitsi and Grammos at an altitude of 703 meters. The lake of Kastoria has length 7.5 km, width 5.5 km, and the surface area is 28.65 square kilometers. It is the 8th largest lake in Greece.

According to Greek mythology, the town got its name from the son of Zeus, Castor.

The city was occupied for five centuries from 1383 by the Turks. During the Turkish rule, Kastoria flourished in trade and economic fields. After the organization of the National Committee in 1867 and the Ilinden uprising in 1903, the city was liberated during the First Balkan War on November 11, 1912.
