The city was flourished during both the Byzantine and the Ottoman period. In the early 20th century the city was annexed to the Greek State. At the Second World War the city was conquered by the Germans and the Jewish district was destroyed. Nowadays, Thessaloniki is an administrative, economic and cultural centre not only for northern Greece but for all the Balkans.
