Geomorphologically the islands are characterised by steep rocky shores and coves and the main rocks are marl limestones and sandstones. The climate is mild without extreme changes and the most common winds are the northerly ones and the meltemia. The flora of the islands include maquis shrubland and cedar trees. The name Koufonisia is said to be derived by the pirates. When they saw the caves from the sea they thought they were empty holes in the rocks, which in greek is ‘Koufio-nisi’. The island has been inhabited since the prehistoric times. Like most islands of the Cyclades, Koufonisia were dominated by the Venetians and then by the Turks.
