The terrain of the island is mainly mountainous. The island's vegetation is low and is consisted mainly by brushwood.

According to legend, the island was named by Kythnos, chief of Dryopon which was the first resident, although its existence is disputed. From the 12th century the island was also known by the name Thermia due to the hot springs that are located in Loutra bay. The island has been a place of exile during the reign of King Otto. Nowadays its residents are dealing mainly with tourism and agricultural activities.
