The archaeological findings testify that the island was inhabited since the Bronze Age. In historical times, Schinoussa was 'dropped ' successively in the hands of the Venetians and the Turks while in 1830 it was included in the newly established Greek state.

The island's climate is mild Mediterranean. The ground is smooth with low slopes and the predominant rocks are crystalline limestones. The vegetation is mainly confined to bushes and brushwood.
