In the past, mines of magnetite and hematite were operated in the island. The highest peak of the island is Mount Tourlos with an altitude of 585 meters, followed by Petrias (553 meters), Trachilos (519 meters)  and Varda (432). The homonym capital of Serifos (Chora) is on the top of a 200 meters height hill. At the northwestern part of the island flows the rivers Lygarolakos. At the South flows the river Mavro Klima. In 2004, a dam was constructed for the water supply and irrigation of Serifos. The flora of the island includes fruits, thyme and many prickly herbs.

According to mythology, Serifos was called "Iron Island", inhabited by giant Cyclopes, the sons of Poseidon, who dealt with the mineral wealth. Also in Serifos was found Perseus, grandson of Acrisius and son of Danae, in a basket. Perseus killed Medusa by order of Polydektes, who thought that he sent him to a suicide mission.
