Since antiquity Leros was very important island because of its geographical position. Throughout the centuries the island was conquered by many tribes. As a result a large number of historical attractions are located in the island. On the top of the hill Apytiki, east of the city, stands the Castle of Panagia (Virgin Mary). It is a monument of the Byzantine period that hosts inside the monastery of Panagia Kera (Virgin Mary) with impressive frescoes.

At the entrance of the harbor is the Fort Mpourzi with typical Roman architecture. Entire Lakki is an attraction worth seeing as it has been built by the Italians from scratch in interwar. You can admire the street layout, the parks and the buildings with modern architecture. The visitor should spend a few days to visit nearby islands belonging administratively to Leros like Lebitha, Pharmakonisi and Kinaros.
