According to Greek mythology Leipsoi was Calypso's island. Calypso, according to Homer, tried to keep Odysseus in her island during his journey back to Ithaka.

Leipsoi are inhabited since the Copper Age. Many findings of Geometric and Mycenaean era are preserved in the museum of the island. In 1522, the island passed into the hands of the Turks. In 1912, Leipsoi was occupied by the Italians. In 1945, the island passed into the hands of the British. In 1948, Leipsoi was liberated and incorporated to the Greek State.
