Kythera Island is located between the Peloponnese and Crete. According to Greek mythology, goddess Venus was born in Kythera before she was swept away by the waves to Cyprus.

Kythera is inhabited since the Neolithic era and flourished during the late Bronze Age because of its key geographical position. Over the centuries, the island was conquered by many tribes that contributed to the formation of the local culture.
