According to Greek mythology Icaria was the island of Icarus. Icarus flew too high and the sun melted his wax wings. As a result, he fell to the sea and drowned. The island was inhabited since 7000 BC by the Pelasgians. The ancient name of the island was Dolychi. Today, the capital and port of the island is Agios Kirikos. A second port called Evdilos is placed on the northern part of the island. Icaria occupies an area of 255 sq. km. The inhabitants surpass the 8,500 whose main activity is shipping.
