The island of Ikaria is historically connected to the unfair loss of the mythical Icarus. According to the myth, Icarus was flying too close to the sun and so his wax wings melted and he fell into the sea, the area of which was named after him Icarian Sea.

The long history of the island began in the Neolithic era when the Pelasgians were the first inhabitants to settle. The earliest known name of the island is Dolychi. Today, the harbor town of Agios Kyrikos is the capital of Ikaria. A second smaller harbor town, Evdilos, is located on the northern coast. With a population of more than 8,500 inhabitants and an area of 255 square kilometers, Ikaria is mainly mountainous and is characterized by the contrast of verdant slopes and barren steep rocks.
