Skopelos is the second largest island of the Northern Sporades complex. Characterized by the lush vegetation, the dense pine forests and surrounded by the blue of the Aegean Sea, Skopelos has been declared by the International Organization of Biopolitics as "Green and Blue island". The island has a population of 4,800 inhabitants and covers an area of 95 square km, however  4,000 out of them live in Chora, the capital and the main port of Skopelos.

Other great settlements are the village of Glossa with the port of Loutraki (the second port), Atheato, Klima, Elios and Agontas which is the third port, employed when the main port is not accessible due to the strong winds. The ancient name of the island is Peparithos while archaeological findings confirm that it has been inhabited since the Neolithic Period.
