Chania, located at the northwest coast of Crete, is the capital of the homonym prefecture. The city's history goes back centuries. At the same location was founded the ancient city Kydonia by the King Minoan.

The city flourished during the Venetian Rule as evidenced by the numerous monuments in the old Venetian town of Chania. In the mid-17th century, the city was conquered by the Turks and remained under their rule until the annexation of the entire island in Greek state.
